Inclusion strategy

The Inclusion team exists to create work that is authentic, anti-racist, focused and sustainable.

We believe that inclusion should be:

  • abundant, dynamic and joyful
  • embedded in the priorities of the BFI
  • collaborative and intersectional
  • rooted in professional expertise and lived experience
  • community and care focused
  • disruptive, innovative and creative
  • accessible

Key objectives

1. Community building

We create dynamic, intersectional, magical spaces of understanding for persistently marginalised communities which are open, generous, abundant and joyful. Intersectional community engagement and networking sits at the heart of these spaces whilst also highlighting, promoting and supporting talent on their professional journey as safely as possible. We give people access and introduce them to the industry as well as each other and the BFI

2. Access enabling and knowledge sharing

We give people access to our expertise, spaces and resources, recognising that small interventions from us can have a wider, exponential impact on the work. We utilise the BFI brand to support, legitimise and amplify the work of grassroots and community organisations and their beneficiaries. The BFI also benefits from this expertise and being linked into communities and ways of working that are unfamiliar to us.

3. Consultancy and advocacy

We use our research, expertise and reputation to advocate for this work being undertaken in the right way by other organisations, agencies and businesses, across the UK and internationally and create awareness of the ever-changing Inclusion landscape. We enable ideas to be worked through to action and impact. We collaborate, share and disrupt, in order to move on from “the way things have always been done”. We inspire people to undertake this work confidently, boldly, enthusiastically and authentically.

4. Delivering on our commitments in Screen Culture 2033

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion form one of three cross-cutting principles in Screen Culture 2033, providing thought leadership around social impact, alongside Environmental Sustainability and UK-wide. This inclusion strategy therefore impacts the wider strategic priorities of the BFI and we will be heavily consulted by colleagues in order to meaningfully embed Inclusion into the six strategic ambitions of Screen Culture 2033 including our National Lottery strategy.

Where this fits into wider BFI strategy

Our work is largely industry focused and cuts across all of the work the BFI does in this area as well as working closely alongside the other strategic priorities of SC33 (environmental sustainability and UK-wide).

It should also be considered  with reference to other relevant BFI policies and procedures such as the BFI’s Code of Conduct, Anti-Racism Code of Conduct and our culture drivers
